With the increase in building code does the cost increase match the performance increase for windows?
With the new building code coming into play in November 2022, we’re going to need to start using thermally broken windows as a standard, argon filled, low E. Talking to a supplier at the weekend, so PVC joinery is about 15% more expensive than the aluminium counterpart. They offer about double the performance, so in regards to their R value, huge increase in performance, about double, for a 15% cost increase. Obviously with the new code, the price differential between going to really high-end products, compared to what the minimum products at code is, that that gap’s been reduced, so good opportunity now. If you’re undertaking projects.
Obviously the cost is going to go up because we’re only going to use superior products, but actually the gap to go to like a really, really high quality product is coming down. There’s some stats with the windows, but I’m sure there’ll be some other statistics in regards to insulation and the hvac and whatnot that will come into play as well. Just a little food for thought, that you if you’re thinking about that PVC joinery, and you thought it was out of your price range, well maybe actually that’s not too far away from what “to code” build would be now.
